Bossi's Politics Under Fire

Pictured right: Umberto Bossi

Berlusconi says today, “Enough with the theater.”

Sharing the center stage today’s news is leader of the Northern League, Umberto Bossi. The Northern League is a party that seeks autonomy for Northern Italy in the Pandania region.

Bossi has been involved in politics for decades. His children even bear politically charged names: Roberto Libert à, (Libertà meaning freedom), and Eridano Sirio (Eridano is the name of the the ancient god of the Po river.)

He held the position of Minister without Portfolio for the “Institutional Reforms and Devolution” under Berlusconi’s second election as Prime Minister from 2001-2004.

According to an article in italiafutura.it, there is a large grassroots contingent that supports Bossi’s liberation campaign.

Carlo Calenda and Andrea Romano co-wrote an editorial today criticizing Bossi’s approach in politics. An article in the Corriere della Sera reprinted the most heated phrases from the editorial.

The editorial was titled, "I fatti di chi produce e le parole (e gli insulti) di chi ha fallito," which translates to "the facts of the producer and the words (and insults) of those who failed." The writers held the League responsible for 16 years of political stasis and civil divide.

“Over the past sixteen years he has built the success of the League on the work of party organization and also the provocative,” Calenda and Romano said.

According to leganord.org, the Northern League’s official website, the main goal of the party is to “fight against bureaucracy, statism, centralism, and illegal immigration.”

Bossi was called “il grande protagonista della vita politica italiana” by the site. This translates to, “the greatest protagonist in Italian political culture.”

Bossi is a news maker to watch.
